A 30-year veteran of the stage, Joan Cartwright has performed in South Florida since 1985, and throughout Europe, since 1990. She toured China and Japan, in 2006. Cartwright holds a Master's Degree in Communications from Florida Atlantic University. Her new book, IN PURSUIT OF A MELODY will be launched on April 19, 2007, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her research paper The Sign of the Blues was published in the 1993 International Association of Jazz Educators Research Papers. Her thesis, The Cultural Politics of Commercial Jazz includes interviews with South Florida jazz radio host Len Pace and notable musicians: Quincy Jones, Dr. Billy Taylor, Abbey Lincoln, Sandy Patton, Dewey Redman, Lester Bowie. Joan Cartwright, M.A.
is the recipient of a $6,000 grant from the School Board of Broward
County Student Enrichment Trust Fund.
She lectures on The
History of Jazz and Blues with emphasis on Women
in Jazz. This is Ms. Cartwright's second year receiving the SEAS
grant. Her lectures will be given at Broward County schools from
November 1-17, 2000.
