Send Jay your CDs. He'll play them!

Joan, Thanks for the article on these lovely ladies  of song. You are the only person I know that truly keeps the lives of female instrumentalists, composers, vocalists and others in print. If they send me music, I'll make sure they are featured on my show and other radio shows.

Dear Subscriber,

Spring  has sprung and so have I, while singing every Saturday at . A new idea popped into my head to feature RADIO LADIES who keep the music alive on the airwaves and in cyberspace. One of my favorite endeavors was being a Radio DJ for a Florida radio station and online at www.dr-love.com in Atlanta.

One of our RADIO LADIES is a Blues singer in Minnesota. The other is a jazz DJ in Miami. Both are passionate and dedicated to their respective genres. Who could ask for anything more?

Enjoy this issue and share the newsletter with a friend! and Read my blog.

JAZZ WOMEN

Tracy Fields

WLRN 91.3 Weekend Jazz

Every Saturday night from 8 pm to midnight Tracy Fields presents some of the most diverse new and classic jazz anywhere on radio. Although her training is in communications and journalism, Tracy's first love has always been jazz. She first started listening to jazz when her father played old 78's of the Count Basie Orchestra and LP's of Gloria Lynne, Arthur Prysock and Ray Charles. Her brothers and friends soon turned her on to more modern artists like Weather Report, McCoy Tyner, Stan Getz, Tommy Flanagan, and Gary Bartz.

With her training in journalism and love of jazz music, Tracy always found herself gravitating toward radio stations. During summer breaks from college, she worked at WKEW and WQMG-FM in her home town of Greensboro, North Carolina. She joined WLRN in 1995 and ever since has graced our air with her trademark selections of eclectic jazz. Looking back on her years at WLRN, she says what she has most enjoyed is the rapport she has developed with her audience: "My listeners vary widely in chronological age, but are still young at heart. They say they like the wide variety of music on my show; tunes bring back memories for some, and give others a taste of something new and different. I've learned a lot from them, too, by playing their requests and hearing their stories. Mostly I'm honored that they let me into their cars and homes to keep them company."

To hear Tracy Fields' cool and sophisticated Weekend Jazz program, just tune in to WLRN 91.3 FM Saturday nights from 8 pm to midnight.

BLUES WOMEN

Lady J

Rollin' and Tumblin' (Tuesday 3-6 pm CST)

Jacquie "Lady J" Maddix was born on August 11, 1954, in Minnesota. She is a broadcast veteran with 20 years of experience in radio and television. Her background includes work as an on-air personality at KFAI Radio in Minneapolis, Minnesota as well as on-camera exposure at SPNN, a cable television company in St. Paul Minnesota. Ms. Maddix has also worked in news as a producer, assistant producer and production assistant at CBS's Minnesota affiliate station, WCCO TV. In 1999, Lady J started a record label, Diamond Blue Records to promote and preserve the female side of the blues story and produced a release called "Hit The Big Time" to introduce female talent Grana' Louise to the world. Since that time, Ms. Maddix herself has stepped on stage and is now hosting a live open stage/open mic night called the Diamond Blue Revue to showcase Minnesota's music talent. She is also featured on a 2006 CD release called "Speaking Aged and Mellow" with her "full bodied" treatment of spoken word lyrics over live music, available of course on Diamond Blue Records. Lady J is also a contributing writer to the Twin Cities Blues News and to Minnesota Blues on Stage www.mnblues.com, an WC Handy award-winning internet service. An interview with Jacquie can also be found on Lea Gilmore's "It's a Girl Thang", an internet service that promotes women behind the scenes in the blues. Lady J believes in the magic of the blues and truly feels that music can heal. Her official title on the air is: High Priestess of the Full Bodied Blues. To her, life is all about the alchemy of music, magic and love!

Lady J & the Full Bodied Blues Band can be found EVERY Monday at Shaw's Bar & Grill, 1528 University Ave NE-Mpls with the Diamond Blue Revue, featuring an open stage night of blues, jazz, R&B, funk and soul music.
Showtime: 8:30pm-12:30am.
